Is Water in
Your Recipe?
In more ways than one, water can be an essential
ingredient in anyone's recipe for a healthy life. This month's
Feature Article below, gives you proof and motivation to drink more
water to improve your health.
Water also provides a great form of exercise. As the
weather gets warmer, it's much easier to create a habit that involves
getting wet.
I discovered swimming in my early 20's to get some
exercise once I started working a desk job. I only did 12 laps at a
time when I began, but I slowly increased it over the years, and at my
peak could swim a mile. Fast forward a few decades and I am satisfied
to do half of that, a few times a week. Clearly, I am no athlete, but
it's the experience of it that keeps me going back. While it gives me
a little muscle tone and increased metabolism, it's the other benefits
that are just as valuable: it's a moving meditation that clears out
all the junk in my head. I am able to solve a problem, create new ideas
or come out totally relaxed after my short workout.
I encourage you to commit to a little lap swimming, a
water aerobics class or swimming lessons to see what it can do for
you. You don't have to be great at it, and you might discover that
water exercise fits into your recipe for a healthy life!

Make Friends with Water
According to a March 2009 study by
Pediatrics magazine, children who attended schools where drinking water
was encouraged, were 30% less likely to be overweight than
those who were not encouraged to drink water.
This makes perfect sense and applies to
adults as well. When you satisfy your thirst with water you are less
likely to go for the artificially flavored sodas and juices. Also, the
more water you drink the less likely you are to fill yourself with
processed foods and caffeine.
The majority of Americans are dehydrated and this contributes
significantly to a poor state of health. Not only is water a positive
factor in fighting obesity, it also flushes out the kidneys and bladder
before they reach toxic levels. Staying hydrated also helps eliminate
pain, headaches and fatigue.
If you don't like the taste of water, try adding some fruit juice, or a
squeeze of lemon or lime to it. Be wary of flavored waters because
they usually contain artificial sweeteners or sugar. See my research. If you forget to
drink during the day, keep bottles available wherever you go: your car,
computer, desk and nightstand--like that extra pair of glasses!
If you are concerned
about plastic leeching into your water, you can purchase aluminum
water containers, like the Sigg bottle that I use, which is
good for the environment as well. Try sipping more water throughout
the day and see if you notice a difference in your hunger or sugar
cravings, or your energy level. Make water your new best friend!

Food Focus: Drink Some Energy
Whether you are
looking to detoxify your liver, clean out your intestines, or just
enjoy a healthy, refreshing drink, creating your own vegetable juice or
fruit smoothie only requires a few ingredients and your imagination.
The fiber from
fruits and vegetables is always beneficial for clearing out any waste
your body is holding onto. Raw produce also provides a lot of enzymes,
vitamins and antioxidants that come with all their associated colors.
If you add a nutritional powder or nut butter you also get protein and
deeper flavor. Making your own juice or drink is a great way to fit in
extra nutrition and provide a boost of energy between meals. All you
need is a simple blender. Experiment and enjoy!
