What's
in Your R & R?
In the month of August
I've got Rest and Reconnect on my agenda. That's when my mother comes
to visit and my daughters are both home before heading off to college.
I wouldn't call it a relaxing time of year, but we do take a break from
the routine to spend quality time together.
While family time may not feel productive like completing your
things-to-do list, it accomplishes a far greater purpose: reconnecting
with those who give your life meaning. Here's a picture of me savoring
some happy moments with my girls. Find some time in these last precious
days of summer to refill your reservoir of deepened relationships,
funny stories and new experiences to refresh your outlook later in the
year.

This Month's Feature Article
Guard well your
spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their
value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the
brightest gems in a useful life. --Ralph Waldo Emerson
Relaxation & Rejuvenation
Summer is often a time for serious play, time off and
deep relaxation. Many of us use the summertime to rebuild our reserves
for the rest of the busy year. In our work-crazed society we can lose
sight of the benefits of slowing down and taking time to rest. Even
though summer is almost over, it's not too late to get your R & R.
Summer is a unique time of year when we can take a lot of our
activities outdoors. Eat a meal outside and watch the passersby. Go to
the park and meditate or read under a favorite tree. One of the
greatest places to rest in the summertime is by the water. There is
something magical and restorative in water, and we naturally crave to
be near it, by it or in it. Heading to the water, whether it is the
beach, a lake or a kiddie pool, can be calming and rejuvenating.
Just as much as the body loves to relax, the body loves to move. Even
though our body is healthiest when it is getting appropriate physical
activity, we often feel dread and boredom when we hear the word
"exercise." Think for a moment of what type of movement you would
consider fun as opposed to torturous. Perhaps you loathe the idea of a
gym, but miss taking dance classes. Maybe you secretly want to try yoga
or rollerblading. You could jump rope with your kids, walk with a
neighbor in the mornings or go for a swim. The summer offers so many
choices - it's simply up to you to choose which style of movement
excites you. Your heart will thank you, your soul will be gratified,
your limbs will be more fluid and you'll sleep better at night.
Whether you are relaxing, exercising or both, notice that being outside
in nature has a profound way of quieting the mind and rejuvenating our
spirit. Often this change of pace is what our bodies crave the most.
So while summer is with us, take off your shoes and enjoy the rich
elements of sun, wind and water and the nourishment that they bring.

Food Focus: Sprouted Grains
People looking for healthy bread options are
becoming big fans of sprouted grain bread. Why are they better for us
than flour products? The main benefit of sprouting any food is
two-fold: first, it releases vital nutrients and second, it makes those
nutrients easier for the body to assimilate.
You may have heard of Ezekial breads and
wraps, usually found in your health food store's refrigerated or
freezer aisle, and at Trader Joe's in the regular bread section. To
unlock the dormant grain energy and maximize nutritional value, Ezekial
adds water to organic grains, which releases beneficial enzymes that
sprout the grains. The resulting sprouted grain is richer in protein
and vitamins than a regular bread made from dry, ground flour. You'll
notice that if you keep Ezekial breads and wraps out on your counter,
they'll spoil after only a few days. That's a good thing! That means
that they have life energy in them, which boosts your own energy when
you eat them. To learn more about the product and where to buy it,
visit www.foodforlife.com.
Recipe: Build-a-Better-Sandwich
You can store Ezekial breads and wraps in the refrigerator or the
freezer - they'll last longest in the freezer. If you store them there,
just pull out what you're going to use a couple minutes before you make
your sandwich. They defrost super quickly. Wraps are perfect for
healthy snacking or lunching!
Ingredients:
Ezekial sprouted corn tortilla (gluten-free)
or sprouted whole grain wraps
Possible Fillings:
· Avocado slices, pinto beans, organic cheddar cheese, salsa
· Turkey, avocado, sprouts, shredded zucchini, dijon mustard
· Tuna or chicken salad, shredded lettuce, tomatoes
· Hummus, tabbouleh, sprouts and cucumbers
· Baked tofu, sautéed spinach and pumpkin seeds
Directions:
1. Put fillings in wrap and fold.
2. Wrap in paper towel or parchment to reduce spillage.
3. Bring to work and refrigerate.
4. Enjoy!
